My friend Mark is the Director of Diversity Programs at the Association of Research Libraries. There are so many amazing opportunities available to library school students from underrepresented groups. I thought I’d share one with an upcoming deadline of Sept. 30th, 2009.
From Mark’s email:
The ARL Career Enhancement Program, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ARL member libraries, offers MLIS students from underrepresented groups an opportunity to jump-start their careers in research libraries by providing a robust internship experience in an ARL member library. Applicants must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS program and complete at least 12 credits prior to engaging in the internship.
The Career Enhancement Program is comprised of the following:
- a 6- to 12-week paid internship at an ARL partner library
- a mentoring relationship with a professional librarian
- an opportunity to attend the 2010 ARL Leadership Institute (held in conjunction with the ALA Midwinter Meeting)
- a potential academic stipend for MLIS coursework
- career placement assistance
For more information on the program, eligibility requirements, and timeline for selection of participants, please visit:

I am happy to answer any questions about the program. Please email me, off list, at my ARL email indicated in the signature below.
